Current Employee - Trainmaster
Current Employee - Trainmaster
Approves of CEO

Pros

Great Training Program
Excellent Starting Pay
Ability to travel to other places
Department Rotations are a great way to see all aspects of the company

Cons

Long Hours
Glass ceilings for some
No flexibility with time in transportation
Operating department jobs have often led to divorce
Can become trapped in certain departments, meaning when opportunities from other departments are possible, your department may deny interviews, promotions etc.

Advice to Management

Allow opportunities for employees to advance without fearing that specific departments will not have enough man power. There are many capable college grad having trouble finding entry level jobs to deny employees with several years career opportunities.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Pretty good benefits and retirement. Ability to move up. Ability to move if you are interested in relocation. Stable company

    Cons

Crazy hours. No work/life balance. Low pay for the hours required. Military style management. No creative thinking. Not really focused on improving the service.

    Advice to Management

If you truly want to change the culture in the organization make a significant change at the top operating spots.

Current Employee - Electrical Engineer Technician
    Approves of CEO

    Pros

    1. pay is decent
    2. benefits are great
    3. having a pension ain't bad either
    4. sometimes you're doing nothing at work, but still getting paid ... "hurry up and wait" has it's benefits!
    5. they know how to make money ... which eventually makes it's way down to employees and not just VP's

    Cons

    1. the management practices need to hurry up and make it to the 21st century
    2. they "know" who they're going to promote before the "so called" interviews begin, so don't think you're going to get promoted from within without knowing the right people
    3. they call themselves "railroaders" and their serious about it! It's a culture that they try to force on you ... whether you agree with the characteristics of the culture or not!

The term I hate most - "Well, this is the railroad ... "

    4. They work the crap out of you ... trust me, if you're getting paid well they're going to work you to the point where you feel severely underpaid.
    5. Also, depending on what your position is and where you work the work-life balance can be a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Will you extra old guys please retire already. You guys will literally work on the railroad until you die!
