I have been working at Northern Natural Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very skilled, friendly and experienced local staff. Company is very willing to hire expert 3rd party contractors where and when needed. Company has no problem spending capital on needed tools and materials. Daily tailgate meeting keeps everyone well versed on recent and ongoing issues. Pay is above average for maintenance type work and on par with industry.

    Cons

Benefits are somewhat below average (high deductible with HSA is only healthcare option). Prescription coverage requires a prior authorization for every prescription, even a change in dosage. Mid and upper level management seem to use the stick rather than the carrot approach though th I seems to be going by the wayside a bit as they retire and new blood is brought in. Bureaucracy is rampant and the owned a of the technician rather than office staff (very few administrative support staff for anything). Training system is extremely burdensome, time consuming, bureaucratic and arguably ineffective (people get fed up with the process and just start pencil whipping through it due to the ridiculously comprehensive nature of it all). There's a check sheet, document or procedure for everything and I mean EVERYTHING. All expenses, including travel are out of pocket then reimbursed (only if you have the proper documentation including receipts, prior authorization, complete arduous expense report). Far too many different business software and data entry systems that don't interact with each other. Punitive safety culture. Poor employee morale and outmoded culture. Offices outside of corporate centers are dumpy and depressing.

    Advice to Management

Improve morale and culture. Vary wages based on cost of living per area. Update ERM software to streamline bureaucracy. Hire more admin support staff for field work. Update office facilities.

I have been working at Northern Natural Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    + Stability
    + Decent wages
    + Adequate benefits
    + Good location
+ A company that pursues and achieves excellence

Many employees, managers and directors care very much and do a great job.

    Cons

    - Erosion of employee benefits
    - Leads through punishment rather than rewards

Imagine a world where parents spend the whole year telling their kid not to screw up. Then only at Christmas, tells their kids that they appreciate them and gives them gifts... Then tells the kids how any gifts they lost out on because of their screw ups. This is working at NNG.

    Advice to Management

Your employees want to be proud of the company. The customer service accolades ring hollow in the face of the seemingly constant undermining of employee morale and motivation.
