Pros

You learn various tricks on how to do different projects from customers, as well as learn about different tools.

Cons

There's too much push on selling the warranties. Also, maintaining 1/3 of the store is not an easy task, while also having to manage customers; answer phone calls; and assist cashiers during discrepancies. The computers associates use are also slower than a speeding snail.

Advice to Management

Don't be too pushy with the warranties. Also, fix the computers' speed; they are a hindrance to sales.

I worked at Northern Tool + Equipment full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Hours of operation and quarterly bonuses were good. Enjoyed working with a diverse public that were challenging and entertaining at the same time. The biggest sense of freedom in my career was leaving NTE.

    Cons

The company wants managers to be "entrepreneurial and act with integrity" yet, the managers are very micro-managed and integrity only implies being that way towards its customers, all bets are off the table with employees. Everything to the company is important, so nothing is really important. Not everyone is on equal footing unless you "click" with certain people. I have been around long enough to see this many times over, from the highest positions in Burnsville, MN to the newest store. The company used to be a fun place to work and was very family centered as it is privately owned. They have lost their way in this sense.

    Advice to Management

Look at the true producers devoted people within the company know who they are and reward them. The same could be said of the suck ups, know who they are and part company. Get back to the roots that brought this company to where it is today. And finally, live the mission statement that has taken years to manifest itself.

I have been working at Northern Tool + Equipment full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Hours for retail management is great, usually not over 45 hours.
Other than that it pays the bills. The hours required is the biggest plus.

    Cons

The company is very unprofessional. This includes upper management and HR. It is a company where unless you are the store manager the ASM will very seldom speak to you or the other employees.

    Advice to Management

Unload the upper management and dead weight lower management and bring in professional managers.
