I have been working at Northrop Grumman full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Compensation is performance-based, which works well provided you're in a visible role. Top tier technical folks rival the top at any tech company. Domain knowledge is well established.

Cons

Opportunities for "new" development are dwindling thanks to sequestration. Instead the interest seems to be in gluing existing components together in new/different ways. While "innovation" is touted the majority of programs are on the trailing edge (older technology, using obsolete compilers, etc.). Management of internal r&d (IRAD) efforts is a tug-of-war between too many parties (BD, individual business units, etc.) which hampers getting anything done. While I have no personal complaints, the shift to functional organization is not treating the majority of engineers all that well.

Advice to Management

If the intent is to shift from a project-oriented to product-oriented organization in light of the industry then spend some money and invest in developing those products!
