I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You have the chance of making a ton of money in a short period of time if you have impeccable timing with the people that you know in your life regarding their financial situation.

    Cons

The long and short of it works like this: Northwestern recruits as many people as they can because the MD’s carry the costs of bringing on new recruits. They couldn’t care less how you are doing as a person, you’re simply a cog in the wheel that makes the company go round meaning produce or get the hell out. Follow the money and it always flows to the senior reps through the “Client Resource Center” (orphaned policies) and the MD’s that make money on all of the under 5 year reps. So at the end of the day the MD that brings you in wants to use you for everything that you have for 5 years then kick you to the curb like a piece of garbage. You start to see once you’re in it…. At that point it too late.

    Advice to Management

Stop abusing people by taking advantage of their situations. You make people burn their contacts so that they have nothing to go back to when your system doesn’t pan out.

    Pros

With a positive work ethic and a never give up attitude, it is possible to develop quite a nice career. Decent training program to all new Representative and they will pay for your licenses.

    Cons

This is a place where you get out what you put in. If you are not well connected and lack the will to network, financial services may not be the career for you.

    Advice to Management

Mentoring is the key to develop new financial reps. Sometimes it helps to take a new hire under your wing. Develop a program which will encourage this.
