I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Great opportunity for self-motivated individuals who want to work closely with clients.

Cons

It is difficult to create a client base over the course of a summer, and people are often reluctant to trust their finances to an intern.

Advice to Management

Promote more communication between interns and more experienced financial representatives.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company provides you with paid training that helps you learn the industry and sales techniques. They keep you accountable for your productivity which prevents you form side tracking. The products are also very good.

    Cons

This is 100% commission job. They ask you to call all your friends and relatives to prospect. They not necessarily asking you to sell to your family but they do push you to ask your relatives for people that they know to whom you can sell.

    Advice to Management

Give some base salary to your employees.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time

    Pros

Great weekly meetings. Good one on one mentoring. Professional work place. Good work experience.

    Cons

Not very selective in who they want to be an intern. As long as you can form sentences and pass the state exam on life and health. You're in. Pure commission pay. In the beginning, this internship is definitely not enough to pay the bills. As an intern, your connections are likely in college and cannot afford to buy whole life. (Which has high commissions). Some college connections will buy, but only baby term life policies, (Which barley pays).

Very weird to network with family and definitely makes for awkward moments.

    Advice to Management

After getting licensed, have ,any meetings about language and how to network. your first few contacts are your most important. Dont blow them!
