I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Accountability and direct exposure to the financial services field
Potential for good commissions
Allows you to get a good feel for what a great financial plan looks like and the strategies involved
Business Coaching and mentoring
Potential to engage with higher up management and continue to stay engaged with them

Cons

Money isn't there if you aren't selling
Long hours
Hard to start building your client base
Getting all the licenses
Sometimes you will run into license conflicts/

Advice to Management

Restructure compensation to salary and be stricter in regards to hiring interns. We don't need a high turnover rate for employees... We need to get people and keep them with the company, most interns now are using the experience as a stepping stone which is a huge cost to the company.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exposure to wealth management industry, learning how to pitch/present yourself, setting your own schedule, actual trial run of what it is like to be a financial advisor, commission based, you could make whatever you wanted out of internship. little effort if you wanted to

    Cons

commission based, using your family/relative contacts, trying to sell life insurance to older people as a 20 year old is very hard, no accountability if you didn't want to work.

    Advice to Management

Try to have more of a set program for interns across the country. I know in some offices they had different programs in monitoring interns relative to my office.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

High quality, inspiring people. As stable as a company can get. Committed to core values. Full of challenge. Most who enter the company and perform well will never leave. Culture is extremely strong.

    Cons

Not always the right people in the right positions. Main career (financial representative) is extremely challenging and many who try it will not be successful in the role.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate leadership constantly and don't shy away from change. Adapt to changing technology and invest in new resources.
