I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Unrivaled independence. Northwestern Mutual lets you make your own schedule and commission lets you decide how much you want to make. You have an opportunity to make a real impact on people's lives. Emphasis on personal growth and development on and off the clock sets Northwestern Mutual apart.

Cons

As with many financial institutions, Northwestern Mutual is a very formal company. Be prepared for constant business formal dress, professional situations, and being in a constant state of marketing yourself. If you love to chase sales goals, this could be the job for you. It is a very tough career for the first few years and requires you to ask tough questions and be courageous.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has a great track record and offers quality products.
They are more conservative in their approach to financial planning (pro if your conservative).
They are located all over the US so your free to transfer to a desired location...most of the time.
They are big on joint work, this is beneficial to new hires so that they can learn from more experienced individuals...just hope that you can find someone willing to go with you.

    Cons

Because they have no leads for the agents, you must do all of that yourself. It can be tough in the beginning, but if you stick with it, I've seen many make it through and be very successful.
They are more conservative in their approach to financial planning (con if your not conservative).
The commission earned is less than other financial services companies.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great sales training, on-phone and in person communication skills dramatically improved. Great opportunity to make money if you are very personable but don't take rejection personally.

    Cons

They basically ask you to call all your family and family friends and meet with them and try to sell them insurance or get them to give you friends they know. It was personally uncomfortable asking a lot of these things of friends and family. A lot of work to get the licenses and work hours are flexible but only a small stipend if you do not make any sales.

    Advice to Management

Make students more aware of program requirements and duties before they are accepted. Great training and experience but a lot of work for a frustrating process as a college student.
