I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great training, Internship is a top-notch way to get some sales experience and get a feel for insurance. Products are among the best in the industry. Being able to work with experienced reps on sales is huge, although you do have to give them half your commission.

    Cons

The job is just miserable and 97% of people who try it end up quitting or washing out within the first couple of years. Pay is commission-only and given the hours you work and the nature of the job you might as well not be getting paid; unless you know a lot of very rich people who need insurance you probably wont make any money at all. Also the fact that all of your leads come from your family and social circle can put you in some very tough situations that make it hard to properly separate your work and personal life.

    Advice to Management

I can't fault management for most of the problems with the job. Its not their fault that selling insurance to your friends and family or cold calling strangers sucks.
