I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You work for yourself (kind of), Flexibility in Schedule, Earning Potential, Training, Decent Start-up Support (minimal office expense, etc.), Good Products

    Cons

Lack of teamwork: team claims that they will do joint work with you, but will only want to do joint work if the potential client makes decent money. Limited opportunity for advancement: be prepared to wait some time (several years) to become a leader. Product is not cheap: NWM is more expensive than many competitors, (even though returns may be better) it can be difficult to sell. Amount of Prospecting: NWM places more emphasis on Prospecting than competitors. You are expected to place 40 dials PER DAY and Prospect at every meeting. This can be overwhelming.

    Advice to Management

Competition: There is A LOT of competition in the market. Be sure potential reps have a good understanding of the market place when on-boarding. Also, inform potential reps and new reps of resistance (i.e. Dave Ramsey) and how to overcome objections.

Importance of Insurance Business: New "financial" reps are insurance salesman. Unless new reps know several very wealthy individuals who want to switch their investment portfolio to the rep, new reps won't be able to make significant money in securities for several years. Don't make securities a focus for potential reps.

  2. "Internship program."

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern

    Pros

The internship program gives you the same responsibilities as a full time rep. All successes and failures you experience are your own doing.

    Cons

Very hard industry. It will take a lot of work to be successful, but anything worth having is worth working for, so don't complain.
