I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Freedom to work by your schedule, unlimited earning potential, exceptional training program, out visiting clients 80% of the day instead of sitting at a desk.

Cons

Uncomfortable getting used to if you're not sociable or scared of making phone calls. 100% commision which makes it tough to get started, but once you're going you can make unbelievable amounts of income.

Advice to Management

Nothing, absolutely a breath of fresh air coming from "Corporate America"

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you want a career as an insurance salesman then NM is the place to be. Good solid company that doesn't screw their policy owners.

    Cons

If you are looking for a career as an investment advisor or financial planner then steer clear of NM. They want you to become successful as an insurance agent and only then dip your toe into investments. Of course, by then, your clients will view you as an insurance salesman and already have "an investment guy". Sorry... And you will have invested so much time learning insurance you won't have the knowledge or confidence to discuss investments with any sophisticated investor. Sorry... And by the way, you may hear the term, "Planning the NM Way". What that really means is that there is no problem your clients have that can't be solved by buying more insurance products.

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending you are anything other than an insurance company. You offer limited investment access just to lure recruits. By your own admission, a new recruit has an 85% chance of failing in the first three years. Pathetic! Nearly every senior management position is held by an attorney, CPA or actuary. That is a recipe for failure in a sales organization.
