I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern

Pros

Great team environment. Room for personal growth. Make your own schedule but the company keeps you accountable by pushing you to meet certain activity goals. Good compensation for hard work. Management motivates you to acquire additional licenses and certifications.

Cons

To initially succeed you need to put in at least 60 hours a week, preferably more, unless you have a strong natural market. No base salary. Certain minimums must be met before Northwestern will sponsor you to attain basic investments licenses. This makes it hard to do what they want you to do with clients, be a financial planner, without working with other members within the office.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company truly believes in doing what is best for the policy holder.

    Cons

They only want the best in the field. If you are not in the top 25%, it is easier to work as a financial rep for other companies.

    Advice to Management

Remember that the employees of the Agencies are CRITICAL to the success of the whole enterprise. Get more involved to insure that those employees are treated well in their agencies.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great weekly skill builder meetings
    Through amounts of training

    Cons

It's a sales job so if you aren't making sales, you're not going to cut it.

    Advice to Management

Warn the interns a bit more about what they are going to be really doing earlier on.
