I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Great talent pool, innovative mindset, optimistic attitudes. The community of scientists is very intelligent - easy to find like minded colleagues. People are interested to discuss new ideas. If you find the right group of people who support your ideas, you can get a lot done.

Cons

Some snobbish attitudes. have to be from the "Ivy" to get automatic credibility. Everybody else has to earn it. "visibility" is a must for being promoted.

Advice to Management

Look beyond the surface when assessing leadership capabilities. Be serious about performance management. Promote women and minorities into leadership roles.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Relaxed work environment

    - Nice cafe/central location right next to MIT

    - Being in a more academic/research environment vs. crunch-time startup feel

    Cons

    - Politics not only on team, but among multiple department heads but also among different NIBR sites across the globe; different people with different agenda's, make a project go nowhere.

    - Outdated tech and incompetency; on average, adopts tech that was adopted by startup's 5 years ago. Uses convoluted technology, like running C# stack on top of Oracle. Some tech-leads write wait() instead of callback's to process Ajax requests. Sys-admin's don't know what a .dll file is.

    - Too many external support teams. Can't develop app's done because external teams take months or even years to deliver external services, servers and licenses. Felt like dealing the DMV instead of in-house support teams.

    - Bad management structure. Dev's are assigned to different projects driven by different PMs but report to their own technical team. PMs only care about their own project while your technical boss has no visibility on your own performance as they are not involved in the projects. So your career is in deadwater.

    Advice to Management

Instead of promoting people because they have a PhD in life sciences or know how to present themselves, hire some young blood from a startup environment and get them to lead and manage the projects. A lot of good intention in the IT projects but no good results and things move at a snail's pace, and that's what causes good developers to leave and you are left only with mid-career PM's and dev's who want to suck on the teet of a nice stable European company.
