I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

NIBR is committed to developing drugs in niche/orphan disease areas. Therefore your work can have a direct impact on patients' lives.

Cons

Of course, the company is not in the niche disease business to be altruistic; companies can charge a premium for drugs in these disease areas.

The usual bureaucratic process to get things done in a public company in a regulated industry.

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits were amazing and kept you coming back for more. The projects were excellent but senior management could not see potential. The access to excellent resources and technology, that is if you could figure out how to get to them through the bureaucracy.

    Cons

Novartis bought Alcon, waited the allotted amount of time, absorbed Alcon's Research division into NIBR, and then laid off the Research division. NIBR did not respect any views that differed from theirs and the DA head showed a singular lack of vision, lack of leadership, and lack of ability to listen. The number of meetings required to allow a project to progress was mind-numbing.

    Advice to Management

There are intelligent, creative people who do not live in Boston. Micromanagement has no place in science and research. NIBR has existed for over ten years, and there has been no blockbuster. How much longer will the board allow the NIBR research paradigm to continue without a return on investment?
