I worked at OHSU full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great benefit
Pay well
Union protection
If you are a laid back person or waiting for retire, I say this is a great company to work for.

Cons

career promotion is limited
lots of politics involved
If you are looking for great career opportunities, this is definitely not a place you want to work at. Was told by the manager that the flow for new position is slow and due to the great benefit, no one would want to retire.

Advice to Management

Be honest to your new hire. Dont tell them there are lots of career opportunities and after they finished their probation, then told them they have to wait years to change to another group.

I have been working at OHSU full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

High quality clinical work in a collegial setting. Beautiful small city that is easy to get arou nd, much like a small town. Spectacular lifestyle, but must not mind gray skies and drizzle! The relationship between clinical departments is wonderful. If you are very motivated you can go far. OHSU is a home for academic underachievers among medical schools. You can advance very far by publishing and pushing yourself a bit.

    Cons

Limitations in salary compared with other positions in other universities. This must be weighed against overall considerations of lifestyle. The city has much to enjoy. Your commute will not be difficult, generally. the occasional icy roads can be a bit treacherous. On a clear day there is no more beautiful place, but clear days are in the minority! The university is, like many state run institutions, subject to state budget cuts and loss of federal support. Most often, funding is at least adequate, however.

    Advice to Management

Improve the parking situation! Improved salaries would be extremely helpful.

I worked at OHSU (More than a year)

    Pros

Many good seminars, big research community especially in neuroscience. Decent free health plan and 70% off from yearly transit pass.

    Cons

Library is quite lacking. A lot of electronic journals are not fully available.

    Advice to Management

    Improve library.
