Pros

This is a company that is very involved in the community and they do promote the development of leadership skills. Compensation and benefits are pretty good, but as a younger employee, there are other perks I would like to see like flex time and the ability to work from home.

Cons

Depending on the department you work in, either you are very involved with other people and your input is sought, or you are micromanaged to the point of despair. Graphic designers are generally treated like "support staff" (management's wording) which tends to be disheartening.

Advice to Management

Although you may be panicking about the changes going on in the print industry, I don't recommend you put all your eggs in one basket and focus on the online/digital options. As someone in the age group they want to gain as an audience, I'm not finding the online options very interesting. I would still prefer a paper product, but one with a little more local content vs. the AP stories that seem to be increasing after recent layoffs. Also, consider flexible schedules for those other than the pressroom. Not everyone needs to be at work 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

    Pros

Management is trying to deal with the challenges facing the newspaper business, but the company at times still wants to be all things to all people in the community. It should focus on what it does best, which is gather and distribute news.

    Cons

Top management is too cosy with the local business community. That sometimes trickles down into news coverage. Not often, but it does happen from time to time on sensitive stories.

    Advice to Management

Remember that there is still a demand for news. The technological bells and whistles you've added to the Website (video, podcasts, etc.) are good, but they are no substitute for actual people asking actual questions.
