I worked at Office Depot part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Most of my co-workers were great to work with.
The second manager we had was very cool and very effective as a manager.
They complied with my desired working hours.
Some of the customers were cool and nice.
They had many goals and made them apparent to the company. Always looked to grow.

Cons

Corporate did not communicate with each other at all. One department would want us to do something one way and another would want things done another way. Therefore, they would always complain about our "lack of effort" and "lack of cooperation." Our manager was almost always fed up.
They would get mad if we didn't reach sales goals knowing that the store was a 5K store, meaning it was smaller than a normal operating store. So the goals they desired were a bit unattainable for our store.
The first manager was the worse.
A few of the Supervisors and Assistant Managers thought they were above the law.
Waiting for lunch breaks sucked if you started work after 2 or more people.
The pay isn't that great, but then again most retail jobs aren't.
A lot of the customers were horrible.
(I would have rated them 1 or 2 stars if it weren't for my co-workers.)

Advice to Management

This is more to Corporate, but you guys need to hire the managers who care enough and have the people skills with not only their customers but with their employees. You people also need to communicate with everyone and stop acting like dictators just because you're in positions of leadership!

I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Honestly can't think of any anymore. Talk to me 10 years ago and it would have been a different story.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations set by Middle and Upper management.
Decision making power continuously being taken away from store level management.
Although not all bad, some benefits have been taken away/lowered. I.E. 401k match dropped from 6% down to 2% ( .50 on dollar ).
This company is hemorrhaging their good talent. Middle management seem to be jumping ship every day.
The pay grade ranges have recently been lowered. No real room for negotiation.
Haven't met a person in this company for years happy with their position.

    Advice to Management

Need to do a better job at keeping the employees happy, before you lose everyone worth keeping.

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Positive treatment of associates.
Bonus's that are more than fair and attainable.
Company is constantly trying to get better.
Opportunity's that will be created by the merger.

    Cons

Need to have a stabilized upper management
New business models has many positive's but needs to be looked at with a reality check on certain pieces.
Unkowns that will/are being created by the merger.

    Advice to Management

Please understand that reality's of spinning so many plates at once causes missed opportunity's, Basics of retailing cannot be ignored, too many foo/foo pie in the sky daily expectations get in the way of great customer service----great product assortment---well stocked---well merched stores
