Pros

Location - South Florida weather

Cons

Ineffective senior management - same stuff over and over and over and over. It's like Groundhog Day at OD!!

Lack of direction and no communication of strategy leaves everyone paralyzed - there are not a lot of reasons to work your butt off right now, but we do have some solid team members. If we could cut out more deadwood, we'd be in good shape. Unfortunately, the recent voluntary exit package was ignored by those who really should have taken it - the long-term employees in management positions ONLY because they've been there for many years.

Advice to Management

Please give us some direction - unlock that strategy you keep talking about and communicate it down to us. Once you do, please hold to it, even if a week or month is not comping as strong as you'd like. Sometimes it takes a while for benefits to kick in - if we hold the line, we'll be successful in the long run.

    Pros

Office Depot has very mature IT systems and processes and skilled/knowledgeable people.

    Cons

This is not the place for an IT Project Manager. All the responsibility, influence, and impacting work resides with the IT Leads/Development Managers and the functional leads. They are the real managers who deliver solutions. Trying to actually learn something about the business or the way it functions is almost impossible. If you want to push paper, then join ODP as an IT PM.

    Advice to Management

There are of course quite a few lessons learned from the direction that Office Depot has headed recently. The European and domestic sales tanked and Staples continues to gain ground on them as the superior office product supplier. In the IT area, they way overstepped their abilities to deploy a large ERP initiative that was under-resourced with an ever increasing scope. These are more symptoms rather then solutions but are the mistakes that management needs to deal with.

    Pros

    Fortune 200 company, Industry Visibility

    Cons

lack of leadership, greed at the executive level, direction-less ideas, top-heavy reporting structure, poor benefits, very low morale

    Advice to Management

It doesn't hurt to say thank you from time to time. With the work environment as poor as it is, being gracious for the extra time and effort employees put in, a thank you would at least help ease some of the anxiety and poor
