I worked at Office of the Comptroller of the Currency full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great work life balance, amazing benefits, small organization that allows you to get to know a lot of people both in DC and throughout the country

Cons

Pay is not on the GS scale, so very few "ladder" positions are available. The pay bands are extremely wide (talking $40k+ from bottom to top) and pay raises are based on "performance" although it seemed to be more based on politics. Depends on your manager. Also, not a great place to grow if you are not an accountant/financial analyst.

I have been working at Office of the Comptroller of the Currency full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large bank compensation and benefits are excellent. Challenging work assignments.

    Cons

Work life balance is terrible. Management positions filled based on technical skills not managerial skills, resulting in individuals with very poor people and leadership skills being promoted to key managerial positions.

    Advice to Management

Establish two career paths - a technical path and a managerial path.

I have been working at Office of the Comptroller of the Currency full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work is always fresh, challenging, and interesting--it's not every day that you can be part of the biggest banking overhaul in 80 years. Coworkers are sharp, hardworking, and relaxed. Management encourages wellness: subsidized gym, flexible work schedules (most people have every other Friday off), free flu shots, etc. Great compensation and benefits. Culture emphasizes teamwork over hierarchy.

    Cons

The bureaucracy took some getting used to and still frustrates me on occasion. Management is less than transparent on compensation and benefits decisions. Promotions are essentially at fixed intervals and take years (~5) to earn.

    Advice to Management

Deemphasize seniority and invest in the younger employees, particularly with a large number of employees eligible for retirement. Accept more employee input into administrative decisions (e.g., office layout)
