I worked at OfficeMax part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

If you get along with management and your fellow co-workers (which I fortunately did) it's not a bad place to work. Fairly flexible scheduling, the opportunity to play with the latest tech toys, and (especially handy if you're in school) a decent employee discount.

Cons

You're expected to push products and warranties that you know are useless. They also have a habit of running vaguely worded promotions which can lead irate and confused customers that believe you're trying to rip them off.

Advice to Management

Improve the copy on the promotions so there's no way the general public can misunderstand them. Also the employee incentive program could use tweaking-warranties are not an easy sell in their current package.

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The environment is relatively easy-going and I've had the pleasure of working with and for some top-notch colleagues.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the "cons" outweigh the "pros". Simple tasks related to human resources, payroll or individual logistics require going through several people or departments to get anything done and can rarely be done on the intranet by the associate themselves. Being a new part of management personally, I can say with first-hand experience that the communication between individual managers and management teams is unorganized at best. Certain members of management are very good at their jobs and truly good employees but a few people can't carry an entire company.

    Advice to Management

The management staff needs to work on becoming a cohesive unit that can function effectively as individual leaders and as a team rather than individual leaders that are never on the same page and subsequently waste time trying to decipher what needs done versus what has been accomplished.
