I worked at OfficeMax part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Associate discount (kicks in 2-3 months after working there). Flexible work schedule. Can be a good part time job if you work a shift with a good manager who doesn't micromanage and treats with respect and like a human being not a machine.

Cons

My cousin worked here for a short time. The expectation of associates is unrealistic, especially for those who have to close the store. They don't have enough people working second shift and when it gets busy you are expected to be a magician who can check people through the line, listen on the intercom, clean the front of the store "in between customers", answer the phone while waiting on customers. When you stay past your shift to finish the job (clean toilets or windows), you get no acknowledgment or thanks for staying late. You get "talked to" if you don't sell enough Max Assurance or don't move people through the line fast enough (even though there is no one to back you up or all the tills are empty because it's almost closing). It's too stressful. This is a store in Washington state.

Advice to Management

Leadership training/performance management. New computer/tills that are faster and don't freeze up. Give employees more training before becoming cashiers. Provide realistic expectations for employees, give positive feedback when someone provides consistent, dependable service. 90% of Associates are doing the best they can. Treat them with dignity and respect because they impact repeat business. When morale is low, it impacts customer service. Customers can see right through all of this and want to shop where employees are treated well. When District managers recognize store managers (for sales and selling insurance), pass along that appreciation to the worker bees.
