I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Some of the smartest people I know without the attitude I find prevalent at a lot of the other consulting firms. The Toronto office in particular is a lot of fun with Friday Office Drinks and a collegial atmosphere.

Cons

The name isn't all that well known - but it's getting a lot better. The hours are rough, but that's to be expected in consulting.

I worked at Oliver Wyman part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company values work life balance, and for some positions there can be flexibility in your work schedule and opportunities for part time employment with benefits. The people are mostly very professional and pleasant to work with.

    Cons

Back in the good days this company used to treat support staff as a part of the whole team. The compensation scheme was generous and support staff were invited to all company functions along with the consultants. Those days are long over; now it's like anywhere else in Corporate America. The bigger the company gets, the less resource is budgeted for the support staff, which sets up the support staff for failure.

"Lacks unity and sense of mission"

    Pros

Good team spirit, fair compensation. The work environment (in the UK offices at least) is open-plan and high-energy. The company deals with you fairly if you have a problem.

    Cons

Progression is difficult: once you're in a box it is hard to get out. Too many external hires (particularly at Partner/Principal level) without looking for talent inside. Some Partners are contribute very little in terms of winning business and doing valuable work: they prefer just to look busy and important.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of non-performing Partners and allow Consultants/Principals to move into the spaces.
Give employees at all levels a sense of purpose.
