Pros

Here you are given the opportunity to support persons with developmental disabilities. The clients really need honest, caring staff who are willing and able to help them improve their daily living skills.

Cons

It can be a rewarding experience for staff willing to endure the stifling management which seems to be ever-diligent to punish you for seemingly minor "offences" and rarely rewards the staff for a good job.

Advice to Management

Instead of constantly stifling new ideas, be open to and actually consider the ideas of new staff. It seems that in Opportunity Village, there is a "core" of "old-timers" who are now in their leadership positions not based upon merit or training or background, but simply because they have put in the time at the Village. This has resulted in the Village remaining stagnant and backward-looking ( remember the "good old days? ) instead of vibrant and cutting edge. The clients deserve MUCH more than they are getting. Oh, there is SO MUCH more the Village could be doing to provide excellent services to our clients, but too many upper management are either incapable or unwilling to change enough to allow the Village to evolve and grow.

    Pros

You get to make a difference and get swept up in the clients' enthusiasm. It's a job that will put a smile on your face every day! If you make it past 90 days, you will be okay.

    Cons

Little to no support from leadership. Chances are you will be blind sided by being let go just before you hit 90 days, without being coached or guided as to what you can do to keep your job.

    Advice to Management

Coach and develop your employees. Take responsibility for your recruits and guide them when it looks like they might be off course. Don't be so quick to dismiss people who really want to be there.

I worked at Opportunity Village full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the clients and some of the staff were great.

    Cons

They want you to have to many assignments for one person to keep up with. Salary pay is low.

    Advice to Management

Give raises and bonuses. Get your management team on the same page. Stop trying to have your management team do everything.
