Pros

LGBT Workplace Advocacy
Doing alot with a little
Outstanding staff expertise and dedication
Work/Life balance
Opportunities to grow in a job
Open communication
Org. is always striving to get better and better-building on current excellence without complacency
Professional
Fun
Exciting

Cons

After a shake up and some hard times a while, the place now has the right people in the right places and improvements happen every day.
The only con is about resources-money, staff, --typical of non profits--can get frustrating striving for the excellence without enough tools-
Yet, despite the terrible economy, top management strives to treat all employees fairly and rewards them with what they can.

    Pros

The non-profit has a mission to support the equality of LGBT people in the workplace so their mission is valuable and necessary.

    Cons

Management communicates poorly with staff, direction of a work project can change without warning. High turnover. Respect for employees is somewhat lacking.

    Advice to Management

Management training for ED and general manager, better oversight by Board of Directors. Employee recognition is generally poor.

    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Out & Equal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Easy commute
    -Excellent benefits
    -Dedicated and competent staff

    Cons

    -Financially irresponsible board and CEO
    -Emotionally abusive CEO
-Lack of oversight from the board
-Poor leadership keeps org. from being effective
-Board is handpicked by the CEO (board has little to no interaction with staff)
    -Poor implementation of mission
-Un-collaborative with other non profit organizations (if anything, they are competitive)
-Massive staff turnover (and most staff leave under great distress)
-Little to no transparency (full 990 report isn't even posted on the website - which is quite unethical. What do they have to hide?)

O&E is really an extravagant events planning company and doesn't do much to promote or effectively implement change for LGBT workplace equality. It's very obvious the most positive reviews were done by current employees in order to override all of the negative reviews dating back to 2008 (probably by management and commissioned by the CEO). It is certainly not a "culture of yes" or a "great place to grow" as most hard working staff are constantly denied earned promotions, raises, and bonuses while the CEO has extravagant travel expenses paid for, a guaranteed annual bonus, and receives an outrageous salary of $290K plus benefits (according to the full 2012 990 which can be pulled from Charity Navigator - 2014 isn't out yet). There are also some questionable ethics around board selection and procedures, and the board only really interacts with the CEO and is actively kept from interacting with the staff.

    Advice to Management

Change in management, starting with the root of the problem, the CEO. This will only happen if the board actually becomes engaged. This may be difficult if the board continues to be handpicked by the CEO. The organization could be so much more and do good work for the community with new management. Wake up, board!

Do not blame staff for the negative environment, as this is something I have seen in previous reviews - shame on you! The same issues have been going on for a decade and the culture of any work environment starts at the top.

If you are looking to work effectively in the LGBT movement, and have a stable work environment, I suggest you look to another organization.
