Pros

To make the world better. To make the world better. To make the world better. To make the world better. Educate, inform, and inspire!

Cons

It was very stressful and demanding. You have to prioritize your time very well. Show up early and leave late.

Advice to Management

Sometimes I witnessed a bit too much of micro-managing. I think that produces excellence, but perhaps a bit too much of it still.

    Pros

PBS is a wonderful brand that people all around the country love and it's fun to be part of delivering something that stands apart in the media world. The senior team invites and encourages employees to share new ideas, and when you have a good one, there is room and support to run with it. This is great for professional growth. It's a tremendously friendly and thoughtful team, with some whip-smart people mixed in. And, the environment respects and accommodates work-life balance.

    Cons

In the last 3 years, there have been as many rounds of reorganization, resulting in lost jobs, decreased budgets, and increased workloads for staff who remain. Like any other nonprofit, there is always a battle for funding to support the work. An increasingly competitive media world makes it increasingly challenging to keep up, so join the team if you want to be a catalyst for innovation and change, and don't mind a big, fat, enduring funding challenge!

    Advice to Management

Define and convey a clear vision for the future of PBS; say no sometimes; don't do everything by consensus; diversify the board of directors to have more professions and organizations represented; renew commitment to lifestyle shows that helped build the early success of PBS.

    Pros

    PBS is a collaborative environment
Employees, for the most part, are very nice and reasonable, especially compared to employees at other companies.

    Cons

Unfortunately, there's not as much opportunity for career advancement
The annual pay raises are fairly meager compared to other companies

    Advice to Management

PBS has a bit of a reputation of not advancing their employees very often. Management could do a better job of better rewarding employees who have gone and beyond and are consistently excelling in their job from year to year.
