Pros

Great leadership, company that is easy to be proud of. PBS really seems to value its employees, which can be seen through its compensation, benefits, retention, and recognition.

Cons

I guess you could say compensation, but for a non-profit, I thought it was pretty good. I even got a bonus.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work!

"PBS: Do your homework about the station/PBS relationship. This is not a media company. It's a membership association."

    Pros

Salaries are better than most non-profits as PBS compares itself to "media" companies

    Cons

PBS/Station relationship is tense; business model is locked in the past which makes it difficult for PBS and the stations to move forward and provide the best service to Americans. As a result, it's a very difficult work environment that tends to be driven by station politics versus the best goals for its audience

    Advice to Management

Push forward on a new model that consolidates stations by states and creates more efficiencies to free up resources across the system

    Pros

If you want to be in a relatively low pressure environment while working for the greater good, PBS is a good career fit. This is not to say you'll be twiddling your thumbs, but manic deadlines of commercial networks do not exist here. The experience depends a lot on the department you work for -- they are somewhat segmented. The DC location is great for someone interested in media who wants to avoid impersonal, fast-paced NYC.

    Cons

Lack of strategic direction, internal communication is poor, old guard is keeping things from moving forward faster. If interested in moving up the latter fast, this is not the place for you. But if you are dedicated to PBS' mission and have patience, it could be a great fit.

    Advice to Management

Shake things up, from staff to programming. PBS needs to become leaner and more efficient if it is to survive.
