Pros

Puente Learning Center is a mess. The plus side is the building is nice, but it’s sterile, and most of the community doesn’t even know what goes on inside, so you wouldn’t say it was a successful community organization. Most of the teachers are wonderful colleagues.

Cons

Classes are diminishing in size and number, long-time employees are being fired or having hours reduced, there have been multiple leadership transitions, and the new CEO (Andrea Bazan, not Steven Fink) seems completely lost but too egotistical to know it. The board is absent, and this is a rudderless ship. If it didn’t have so much money in the bank (maybe from years of poorly paying employees), it would fold. New money is drying up as the philanthropic community sees this contraction of services. Another review here says new management is unethical, but that’s been a problem at Puente for years. Everyone who works here has seen it. Current management is an improvement only in so far as the CEO’s cousins and uncles and sisters and brothers and aunts aren’t employed here at over-inflated salaries … yet. It is an unpleasant place to work. While colleagues are great, management is in closed-door meetings, when it is present at all. One day you are commended for your job, the next day you are vilified, though your performance has remained constant. There are no published standards, and even as you try to set your own goals, you are hindered by management, who would prefer to keep their goals a secret, presumably so you will never meet them and then can be castigated. There is something of a high school mentality going on here, with favorites, mean girls, bullies and too much drinking. Not merely is this tolerated, this is the organizational culture being fostered. Soon this will be a place—at best--of the mediocre leading the mediocre.

PUENTE Learning Center Response

PUENTE Learning Center Our Mission: People United to Enrich the Neighborhood Through Education. Our Vision: Education is the bridge that empowers lives and builds thriving communities. Our Values: Commitment to Education, Collaborative Spirit, Culture of Excellence All of PUENTE’s programs have developed as the result of the organization’s respectful and ongoing dialogue with the communities it serves, ensuring that the programs are a direct response to the training and educational needs of its constituents. PUENTE is in an exciting time of growth. The center’s new CEO, Andrea Bazán, comes with a wide-range of experience and skills in the nonprofit sector as she has served in multiple organizations during her career. Her depth of expertise comes at a key point in PUENTE’s history. Her demonstrated ability to create collaborative relationships, to empower individuals to achieve excellence, and her understanding of the importance of a transparent environment are the building blocks of PUENTE’s sustainability. PUENTE is fortunate that she has committed to serve and lead the organization at this pivotal time. As part of Andrea’s initial focus, the PUENTE Charter School received the approval to renew its 5-year commitment and expand to full-day services for the TK and kindergarten students. The center also received funding to build a playground, sponsored by KaBOOM and Target, which enhances more opportunities for the 2017-18 incoming students. Equally important are community-building events, such as PUENTE’s first Family Fun Fest, the 12th Annual Golf Tournament, A Magical Night, and Christmas Under the Stars. In response to the changing educational needs of the community, PUENTE will offer new programs including High School Computer Coding, Accelerated English Classes, a redesigned HSD program, and a reconfigured Afterschool Enrichment program. As PUENTE moves ahead, students, staff, and community stakeholders are inspired to fulfill their roles as partners in implementing the recently developed 3-year strategic plan (published at www.puente.org). Thank you for your interest PUENTE Learning Center. We look forward to reviewing your resume and invite you to view in more detail what is happening at PUENTE today at www.puente.org.

Pros

I see that there are a number of negative reviews here, but these are all from at least a few years ago, and they don't reflect what it feels like to work at PUENTE now. There was a period of some instability and transition, after the founder left and when there was some leadership turnover in the CEO role and with the Board. But these days, PUENTE really is a very good place to work, with a positive workplace culture where nonprofit professionals can help the community and achieve real results. Jerome Greening has been CEO since fall 2018. He and the executive team are proving to be competent. They are actually achieving results, they are implementing a major building renovation, and the company has a good financial outlook. It seems like the students and parents feel generally satisfied. I know that the staff feels supported. Also, the community is a big part of what makes PUENTE great. Walking through the lobby and seeing students from many different generations, I feel in the presence of the company's mission, and this is a motivating factor for me in my work.

Cons

The organization is still dealing with the after-effects of several years with leadership turnover. The staff might not feel the effects on a day-to-day basis, but more could be done to improve the Board of Directors and repair the company's reputation.
