Pros

Some of the coworkers are friendly. Good place to learn if you have 0 yrs exp in finance. Portland is a nice, quaint town and the city environment is fantastic. Always something to do in Portland.

Cons

The compensation for juniors and mid-level is outrageously low, partially because mgmt understands that they are the only firm in town. Management has even jokingly at a function that the firm has leverage on the employees because Portland is so far away from everywhere else and it would be a pain to move their families. Even the 401K matching is lower than the street average.

This type of thinking causes the firm to inculcate one of the worst cultures on the street. Management turns a blind side to abusive relationships and instills a my-way or highway type of attitude towards the employees, resulting in low company morale. Inexperienced HR department to resolve issues. Career advancement is limited, due to fear of employees jumping ship. Much of employee payouts hampered private equity backing.

Advice to Management

Understand that employee morale is tied to compensation. Instill a more friendly environment. There is a fine line between taking advantage of employees and maximizing company operating margins. If you can't pay employees then dont expect them to work 70 hours weeks and waking up at 4 am.

    Pros

familial atmosphere, most employees have worked there 5+ yrs and turnover is low for the industry. potential compensation is high relative to most other industries. lots of really smart people and world class characters work there, which makes it an interesting/entertaining environment. the HQ is in portland, which is a great place to work/live if you like the outdoors.

    Cons

senior management lacks strategic foresight, are decent followers but are not industry leaders. pay is largely determined on an "as little as possible to keep you here" basis, so solid individual performance can go unrewarded for relatively long periods of time. there is no internal education, so you have to be very self-motivated and pro-active to progress and learn. 'boys-club' atmosphere can be taken too far at times.

    Advice to Management

take risks and think different. you have been aware that the current model is a diminishing opportunity for years, but have done little about it. if you want to "run a different play", then run a different play. there is a strong tendency to talk about running a different play, but then check down to the same play when you get to the line of scrimmage.
