I worked at PayPal full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great company which is doing extremely well in the marketplace. In some groups, the code you touch affects the livelihood of millions of people. A great place to learn about payments and payments processing. Some really top notch engineers.

Cons

More than a few mediocre engineers just coasting. The code base is kind of a mess, although many efforts are being made to fix things. The development environment, building and testing, was a real mess when I was there, although I hear that things have gotten a bit better.

Advice to Management

Prioritize improving the development environment, reducing needless processes, and shortening the list of objectives and priorities.

I worked at PayPal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Somewhat flexible scheduling, good insurance

    Cons

They lull you in with a false sense of security and empowerment. Thats THE WORD there, empowerment. But when you take steps to use that empowerment, they fault you. I was there for a year (in CS) and then transferred to one of the back office departments. I was in that department for a few months, and the supervisor didnt like me so she made up about 15 different things to get me written up. She had no proof but I had no recourse. Went to HR, who did nothing. Because I was a simple agent and the other party was a supervisor, I had no ground to stand on. Nevermind that the year I spent in CS, I exceeded all company expectations and the supervisor stepped down to an agent position. Do not work for this company unless you like to be disrespected and back stabbed on a daily basis. Several of my friends who encouraged me to work there stated they loved it. I'm sure they used to be an awesome company, but I think they are trying to keep up with competitors and keep their bank accounts in the 7 digits. They've forgotten about their employees and the environment that made people want to work there in the first place.

    Advice to Management

Follow through with the policies you set. Dont treat your employees like a meaningless workforce there to make sure your pockets are lined. Also, dont disrespect your employees by making them feel they are heard and then turn around and prove that you could care less how those who control the workforce are abusing their power.

I have been working at PayPal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good work life balance
    Nice facilities
Some very smart people (but a lot of mediocre ppl as well)

    Cons

It seems like there is a reorg always going on...
Not an engineering company, neither a product company, its a business company...
Engineers should not come here to enhance their skills...
Too many mid level dev managers and project managers who dont understand anything at all and are not involved in anything, I am unsure what their job is...

    Advice to Management

Increase transparency, put the company above themselves and stop with the ridiculous reorgs.
Current management seems to get it but remains to be seen how well it is executed and hopefully that would be the end of the reorgs for a while...
