I have been working at Paychex full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Good earning potential, friendly work environment, access to training, great benefits package, if you're willing to relocate, there is room for advancement

Cons

Lagging in technology, management is only focused on the number, they don't really help you try to achieve your goals

I worked at Paychex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Younger co-workers, pretty easy summers, relatively good managers, profit sharing benefits

    Cons

The place has a high turnover rate, mainly because people get burned out and generally most people hate what they do. They always pushed "customer satisfaction" and "stress management". They micro-manage everything and you will have managers monitoring your calls with clients. Worst job I ever had.

    Advice to Management

Make better use of technology, increase salary and job requirements if you want quality personnel to stay.

I have been working at Paychex full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent benefits. You have to screw up pretty bad to get fired. Some great elective training available. Good flex-time options. Connections with co-workers happen faster than average. Appreciation programs, meetings, and events are relatively frequent, entertaining, and accessible. Horizontal moves in the organization are relatively easy. You will probably get close to a 3% raise every year.

    Cons

Stingy with holidays and vacation. No yearly bonus for non-managers. Salaried employees are still required to have set hours. Many functions are outsourced, which can make basic things complicated; for example, time off is still handled on a paper form. Managers and executives at all levels tend to ignore best advice of their employees, so tools and processes for job are usually terribly tedious, inefficient, and a poor fit. Email, web, and IM traffic are monitored for content, and productivity metrics are currently in vogue. Nit-picky attention to appearance of professionalism in cubicle contents, taking of breaks and lunch, and clothing. Overall day-to-day work is more CYA and political than should be for tech. Important concepts or advanced skills in software engineering are often poorly understood by leaders or managers and thus implemented poorly, resulting in things such as a very rigid "Agile" practice, or poor tools like ClearCase. Seniority and an agressive attitude matter more than big picture results or technical ability. Easily-wounded Paychex cultural pride makes change very slow, and attracts or retains brittle micro-managers. I spend almost 100% of my time on legacy work that I supposedly wasn't hired for. Some software releases and hand-offs are planned on national holidays, supposedly because of rigid schedules. Many claims about great ethics, work/life balance, modern use of tech, security, and so on, but often hard to see superlative performance in these areas, and managers and leads in tech often can't cover the bases.

    Advice to Management

Your process is hurting you as much as it helps. To reach the next level you must empower people to make good decisions instead of weighing them down with process driven by paranoia. Also, learn to listen to your people when they have suggestions, requests, or recommendations, especially when it comes to tools needed to do the job or advanced concepts about process efficiency. Right now you're wasting so much labor cost in the software area on pointless effort. You would do better to move away from expensive, outdated SLA-covered software from HP, IBM, and Oracle and instead embrace simpler, cheaper, easier-to-use tools. Offer more time off, you give less than industry standard.
