I worked at Penton full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

The workplace is a newer environment located in a nice part of Downtown Cleveland. They seem to promote from within when skills sets are appropriate. Many employees had been there for many years.

Cons

After the acquisition the work environment suffered. Many employees felt insecure of their job stability and many were laid off. Management tended to talk down to their employees.

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, they have many great ideas to help grow the business.

    Pros

    Wonderful coworkers
    Supportive direct management
Great support from HR on health issues (organizing discounted gym memberships, fitness programs, nutritional help, yoga classes, etc.)
When I started at Penton you felt as if they wanted you there. The VPs and other management on site learned names, felt badly and were somber about necessary recession layoffs (it was a printing company...), and were generally caring human beings who encouraged their workers to do more for them.

    Cons

New senior management found reasons to dispatch all previous helpful, caring supervisors and replace them with previous coworkers from other companies who were blase and uncaring. Surprise layoffs with no forewarning left a constant sense of foreboding on Thursday afternoons (lay-off days). Callous reaction from senior management about layoffs. New management took a relaxed and productive office atmosphere to one of toxic fear and anxiety. Went

    Advice to Management

Get back to old company values and reassess the hiring of auditors who mysteriously find the company lacking a job they 'would be perfect for.' Cultivate a feeling of security by making employees feel valued rather than simply 'lucky to have this job.' Keep hard-working, loyal employees by valuing them as people. Refrain from knocking the locals' hometown while they are in earshot simply because it isn't NYC, it certainly doesn't endear you to people who are already set to be wary of you.

    Pros

    Flexible working environment
Great employees who support each other
    Casual work environment

    Cons

Sr. Management only knows how to manage up. They are out of touch with their employees and the work they do to support the company
    Lack of investment is employees
    Lack of opportunity for employees
Company doesn't compensate for efforts above and beyond

    Advice to Management

Take a good look at your higher level staff
