I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great people to work with and the paid time off benefits are exceptional, the best as far as animal care.

Cons

Cleaning of animal habitats is inevitable and also the health benefits package could see some improvement but overall everything is good.

Advice to Management

Open door policy & documentation.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Insurance for part time and full time employees, paid time off.

    Cons

Petco spent an unreasonable amount of money to use Franklin-Covey's program that petco calls 4dx, it looks great on paper but the actual execution of the program is a horrendous waste of already limited time. They stress "genuine engagements" but do not provide the staff or hours to actually support quality engagements with customers. A "genuine engagement" must include recommending a product and a service even if the service is irrelevant to the customers needs. You must set a goal of at least 3 engagements per hour that you work. The results from your tracker are displayed to all other associates in an attempt to shame employees who did not meet their goals, hoping this will cause them to work harder and care more.

"caught in the act" : a worthless attaboy. This is petco's way of making you feel appreciated. Members of store level management are encouraged to "catch" at least one employee a day doing a good job and recognize them for it. This sounds good, except it takes the place of actual recognition and has no bearing on your annual review or pay raise.

    Pay raises are insultingly low.

Animals do not come first, whatever fad program/process to lure in more customers comes first.

Becoming an "animal expert" is a short computer training program that teaches more about proper merchandising than actual animal care.

Becoming a "nutrition expert" is several long hours of watching pet food company videos providing you with useless and often conflicting information. They sell the brand, not the quality more often than not.

Store level management can be incredibly stressful and you are often reminded by senior management that you are replaceable.

Each year you are asked to participate in an anonymous survey to rate the company. The questions are not relevant to the complaints of many employees. It is just another worthless way to make it look like petco cares about their employees without actually doing anything for them.

Basically, petco is more concerned with their image than actually running a quality establishment.

    Advice to Management

Provide your stores with enough hours to actually run the stores, increase pay raises, and DO NOT treat us as if we are disposable.
