I have been working at Philips full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a big company with a lot of great training and opportunities - if you aggressively seek them out. The people are generally nice and care about what they do.

    Cons

It's a big machine that will chew you up and spit you out if you don't actively manage your career. Not all the parts play as well as they could together and its frustrating to see the potential but not be able to make it happen because of individual incentives.

    Advice to Management

Bring in more people from different companies and background. It needs diversity to change the culture.

I worked at Philips full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company provides a strong, defined career path for young new hires (although older hires struggle to be recognized for their contributions and commitment). The company also offers a broad and robust learning and development program.

    Cons

The phrase "if you're not Dutch, you're not much" has never been more true than it is now. Local (as in North American) employees are leaving at an astonishing rate - numerous in Q1 and Q2, and a lay off announced in the last few days will further erode morale and engagement of those remaining. Dutch employees in the US are brought in to replace those who have left or been forced to leave and they rarely suffer the same fate as local employees, being airlifted out to a secure job in Holland or elsewhere when the going gets tough. Dutch people are regularly promoted while in the US, while other long standing, hi-performing employees are left in the dust. Philips Consumer Lifestyles has boosted its engagement ratings by requiring managers and supervisors to include engagement scores in their incentive-linked annual goals - employees (human nature) inflate their engagement ratings to increase their incentive payments. Draw your own conclusions about this.

    Advice to Management

Increase the honesty and decrease the extravagance. Employees understand that extravagant sales meetings and townhalls are inappropriate when people are losing their jobs. Maintaining this costly "lifestyle" while so many are losing their jobs or moving on is more of a vanity project for the sector leader and increases the impression that this is not an honest environment to work in.
