I have been working at Piedmont Healthcare full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

History of patient care at Piedmont Hospital goes back over a century; since the founding times, generations of physicians, nurses and support staff worked hard to turn Piedmont Hospital into the top private medical center in Atlanta, where patients would be seen by the best doctors in their specialties, and received the best care whether they are treated in the clinic or in the hospital.

    Cons

Things changed when the new Piedmont Healthcare top leadership (under Tim Stack) decided that the best way to load up their big wallets is getting more revenue (more patients to pay), which means buying more hospitals and physician practices. While they say that the integration process brings more choices to patients, in fact, the opposite is true. These patients are now locked into the same system, if they want to keep their doctors. There's a reason whenever something like this happens, it has to be cleared by the anti-trust laws. Another little-known secret to getting more revenue is to coach the surgeons and physicians to come up with (not-so-honest) documentation that would justifies the highest insurance reimbursement.

    Advice to Management

Need to return to a management that understand Piedmont's philosophy and founding principles. We need to put patients first. Will they receive higher quality of care? Or will they become numbers being fed into a system that has a single goal of enriching the top leadership?

"Excellent hospital drifting down hill rapidly"

    Doesn't Recommend
    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    Excellent subspecialists in many areas
Nurses generally very good but (not enough of them)
    Facilities generally good

    Cons

Management is focused on making money, not patient care and not employee satisfaction
Nurses are not respected and are leaving the hospital for better work environments
Decisions to buy cardiology practices (Piedmont Heart Institute) has resulted in wasteful care, less continuity of care, and in general, poorer care.
IMS hospitalist service is of uneven quality and continuity of care is poor
ER MDs are worse than ever
No expertise on staff in quality assurance and no statistical expertise available on staff.

    Advice to Management

Need new CEO; cut Tim Stack's unfairly high salary
Hire more nurses and unit clerks
Flat screen monitors in every nurses station do not replace clerks. What a waste!
Listen to the physicians who are not on the Board. The Board has drunk the Kool-Aid and lost touch with staff, both physicians and nurses.
