Negative Outlook

I worked at Pima Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

A great place to work at the functional level. I was treated as a professional and given a lot of autonomy by several department chairs. Great support staff and co-workers. As long as the students did not complain I was left alone.

Cons

Typical educational bureaucracy starting at the division dean level. No thought to economy, efficiency, or end result. Focus is on process, procedure and asserting power and dominance in the hierarchy. Ultimately demeaning and dehumanizing. Adjunct is fine, but avoid full time if you can.

Advice to Management

Get a clue -- you are not in academia, you are offering a serivce to customers, just like any other business.

    Pros

Really big company with a lot of temporary positions. If you are looking for good competitive pay for temporary seasonal work, good place.

    Cons

No real room for advancement. Every job is under scrutiny for money reasons. A lot of internal politics and gossip between leadership and departments.

    Advice to Management

Really need to look at how employees are managed and have better communication. Confidence needs to be instilled and used to motivate employees.

    Pros

    Great People to work with!!!

    Cons

Worked as a TEMPORARY for several (5+) with no benefits!!!!!

    Advice to Management

My suggestions would be to be loyal to the people who have been loyal to the College. College temporaries should have hiring priorities over the general public. If someone has been giving you there all for years, then they deserve to be counted as an employee!!! What is with a higher ED facility that doesn’t score applicants with a higher education with extra points on their application? The message is clear; Pima doesn’t value its product or the people who have been severing it for years!!!
