Current Employee - Engineer in Latham, NY
Current Employee - Engineer in Latham, NY
Disapproves of CEO

Pros

New technology, science, new markets;
sometimes acts like small company
diversity; culture is open and loose
opportunities to influence a start-up into commercialization
has transitioned beyond the "not invented here" syndrome

Cons

Many times acts like large Fortune 500 company;
unfocused, trying to put too many "lines in the water".
fiscal management has been poor.
Accountabilityextremely poor
too many locations to support for such a small company with small revenue stream.
Talented executives have mostly departed.
Has had difficulty understanding what potential customers want and need.
Was too focused on the science and a "build it and they will come" mentality
cultural and management differences in different locations is a divide.

Advice to Management

Focus; follow the dollars; make business leaders accountable for business units.
Situational awareness is key
Hire some executive talent from the markets you are trying to serve. Don't focus on other fuel cell companies.

    Pros

    Supportive management, creative environment, friendly co-workers ... CEO is a genuine and nice person. Casual professional atmosphere that promotes growth.

    Cons

    The only thing I can think of is that is is growing so fast that more organization needs to be put in place.

    Advice to Management

    Management here are leaders, not "bosses". Keep up the good work.

    I have been working at Plug Power as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Everyone is understanding and is very knowledgeable about what is happening in the company and how to do their job. People work hard and meet deadlines.

    Cons

    Day to day work can get very hairy. Most of the time you need to memorize complex and inefficient methods to get things done. Very little "formalisms" are used.

    An important example of this is data management. There is very little automation and consistency in keeping clean data.

    Advice to Management

    Put in place more formal procedures for day to day tasks.

    Many things are done "by hand". Many mistakes are a result of this which gets extremely tedious. Including more automated procedures would help streamline allot of workflows
