I worked at Portland State University as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

The tuition remission was really helpful. Also, the work that I did with several professors really helped build my resume.

Cons

The stipend that came with the position was not enough to live on and required a second job and loans to get by.

Advice to Management

I didn't have a lot of interactions with upper management since I worked mostly with my direct professor supervisor.

I worked at Portland State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I was allowed to use my phone and do homework while on the job. As long as you are attentive to customers and your coworkers. It was awesome being allowed to study when it was slow.

    Cons

The job is really customer service orientated. People can be really difficult sometimes and I often found myself drained from answering so many emails and phone calls.

    Advice to Management

Provide more compensation for student employees.

I have been working at Portland State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some fabulous people who value the mission and truly care.

    Cons

All new senior management who believe in appointing rather than conducting formal searches for qualified employees. Too many inexperienced leaders. Every year non-academic units face additional budget cuts while student count and research efforts grow. Management response is to find ways to do more with less.

    Advice to Management

Every year non-academic units face additional budget cuts while student count and research efforts grow. Yet other OUS and OU not facing budget cuts. Someone look at salary expense of this new admin layer compared to previous generation. Huge difference and not for consistent quality.
