I have been working at Pottery Barn part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Great employee discount - 40%

Cons

Horrible pay for back breaking work, no motivation from mgt, no training from mgt

Advice to Management

Please come up with creative ways to motivate employees, despite the low pay. Also, no one enjoys looking like fools to customers when they can't speak intelligently about a product because they've had no training.

I worked at Pottery Barn full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

At the time I was employed the employee discount was 40%. They engaged the employees in all the campaigns and built excitement around the new lines and collections. Employees are selected based on a "match" with the brand which usually resulted in a cohesive and like-minded team.

    Cons

Employees were always treated as if they were thieves. The strict and sometimes senseless norms about placement of items (in non public areas) was ridiculous. For example, in the office only approved items were authorized (no frames, no pictures, no personal touches. Even the tape had its place, which would have been Ok if it was enforced under a nice policy and not under the "big bad central office will....".

    Advice to Management

The williams sonoma family of companies need to listen and take their associate's feedback to heart. One of the things that used to make me cringe was the absolute disregard for the environment. The packaging used by the manufacturers and the company's unwillingness to recycle their materials was debaucherous and stood in direct contrast of their "recycle campaign".
