I worked at Prince George’s County Police Department full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Take home vehicle, overtime, secondary employment

Cons

some supervisors lack leadership abilities and the abilities to train new officers.

Advice to Management

Take more time developing a more in-depth training academy that focuses on what a young officer needs to know on the street. Do not fill up academy hours with pointless information that you will never use in your career.

    Pros

    Stable Job
    Benefits
    No one over your shoulder
    You make the decisions
    Nights can be quiet
    Computers
Television in your little glass cube

    Cons

Rotating Shift Work (days, evenings, midnights)
No where to go for help
    No training to speak of
    No place to advance
Its dangerous when you have to tell violent criminals 'no you can not have your car because you do not have proper registration, insurance, and proof of ownership or a valid license' and all you have is a glass cube to protect you. They get very mad
    Civilians are the unimportant cog
There is too much work for one person to do with 5 phone lines, a front desk, reports to file by *hand* and helping officers and investigators
The pay is very low for the sheer volume of work you do and there are no bonuses because its a government job
You have to actively find the answers to things and drag the information out of people
You are that person that everyone knows is there but no one ever takes the time to meet or care about

    Advice to Management

The civilians are the cogs that keep the machine running. Oil them sometimes

    Pros

Police work at its best. Always something gotta on while you are on the clock. May seem like a con but rotating schedules for me is nice.

    Cons

The pay here should be better considering the amount of work you put in. The county runs about 2000-3000 calls a day.

    Advice to Management

Give us more competitive salaries, and make it easier to buy military time for the veterans on the department.
