Pros

The reputation of the company is wonderful. Working for Procter & Gamble in Marketing has really increased my job opportunities within the Consumer Products industry.

Cons

You are generally required to spend some time working out of Cincinnati. There are limited opportunities in Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Boston.

As the company is entirely promote from within, any external experience is disregarded.

There is a lot of beauracracy and it takes a long time for things to get done.

Advice to Management

Remove certain layers of management and better define roles. I dont' have a job description and I'm not even sure what my manager does.

    Pros

Great training, great colleagues, ethical environment. Decision making is too complicated, with too many silent vetos. The company needs to simplify its processes and reduce layers. Will be difficult to do this while increasing opportunities for all of the great talent that is within the company. Senior leaderships is doing a great job, with an increased focus on diversity of experiences in senior management roles. The challenge is to simplify without making to autocratic. This is made more complicated due to the global nature of the company. There is risk that smaller, nubmler companies may grow faster in the near term.

    Cons

very process-oriented, too much complexity in decision making.

    Advice to Management

make simpler, less complex, decrease layers

"Starting off at P&G can be rough for intern or new hire; stick with it for a couple of years to see if you like it."

    Pros

Job security (pretty much). If you do well and get hired, you have a job for the forseeable future. Also if the economy takes a tumble, you can count on your retirement program surviving very well. You can also look forward to that for decades to come; P&G execs have no need of pulling an Enron, MCI, Globodyne (Fun with Dick & Jane), imclone, etc. The top execs will not abscond with loads of money while leaving thousands of employees broke. There are many other perks too besides the great healthcare/daycare benefits. Usually you get gift packs delivered by Christmas, bonus store items, consumer panels (compensated opinion surveys), free product, etc. etc. There's also King's Island days/giveaways. P&G generally keeps you challenged.

    Cons

There are politics and lots of them, so get used to it. Even as an intern, if you get the wrong boss, chances are you won't want to come back. If it's your first job experience of any kind after high school/college, do NOT think that all companies are like this.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to those under you if they say they need help. You can also listen/help your employees on a personal level without seeming to break that invisible professionalism barrier. It IS okay so seem like a human; we don't expect to be like robots 100% of the time.
