I worked at Providence Health & Services full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Decent benefits
Lot of great people

Cons

Nepotism by executive management
Lack of concern for employee welfare from upper management
Upper management has too much power to exercise retaliatory acts against employees
Lack of communication about system wide issues
Management more concerned with moving ahead than helping to create a culture of compassion and fairness for employees

Advice to Management

You have been entrusted to lead by the mission and core values. If you get that, you can make Providence a better place to work.

I have been working at Providence Health & Services full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is alright, 1% raises the last two years though. Vacation is 5 weeks/yr to start. Competitive tuition reimbursment program. (2000/yr i believe).

    Cons

Focus is not on the patient, only the bottom line, it shows in all aspects of the hospital. A near monopoly on Anchorage healthcare is partially to blame for lacadaisical leadership.

    Advice to Management

Return focus to the patient, explore ways to keep core staff content. The latter has truly been neglected.

I worked at Providence Health & Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A way to be of service to the local community

    Cons

Very low pay for experience base, gossipy environment, lack of focus on patient care, sexism.

    Advice to Management

There are many good examples of high functioning healthcare systems locally. Model yourselves after Group Health or the UWMC.
