I worked at QinetiQ as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Some of the most interesting projects to work on, if you get them. There is a lot of scope for learning. You will have some of the best people around you to work with.

Cons

There can be long stretches of time where there is little to no work available. Your skill set and expertise may be undervalued because there is a lack of work to exploit it. Your experience with them will vary between excitement and fun projects, to a boring research or data mining job.

Advice to Management

Get more work for your employees. Encourage mobility around the business. Place people where their skills are utilised.

I have been working at QinetiQ full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting technical work. Nice colleagues. Some very smart and friendly people. Flexible working. Gym and canteen on main sites are good.

    Cons

Dis-organised. Have to fight for opportunities. Many people pigeon-holed. No clarity about pay or progression. Managers aren't entrepreneurial. Unlike many software companies middle managers don't understand the technologies they are selling/steering the development of.

    Advice to Management

Promote technical expertise. Expect both technical and domain expertise of middle managers. Then they will make good investment and management calls. Better than stifling projects with an excessive risk-toll. Invest in good traits of research organisations such as conference attendance. These are not "jollies" but a fundamental part of making sure scientific staff understand the state of the art in the industries within which they work.

I have been working at QinetiQ full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting and varied work, especially for a new graduate. THe company offers a good opportunity to try a few streams of work before specialising

    Cons

The structured progression is slow, and you can be expected to take on a significant increase in responsibilities before a promotion or payrise.
