Pros

Importance of value added by RAND to the world.
Imperative of being objective and thorough.
Commitment to mission.
Location - Santa Monica is BEAUTIFUL!
Challenge of working with extremely capable people.
Professional administrative staff was very good at their jobs.

Cons

Sometimes encountered elitist researchers.
Pay rates were OK, but not great.
Limited promotion opportunities for most staff - people tended to stay there for many years in the same positions.

Advice to Management

Because of the unique environment at RAND, I think you should have a "dual track" program for staff employees. One track for those who love the company and want to stay in the same job for years, and another track for employees who want a career improvement fast-track and plan to move in/out/in of RAND to other similar responsibilities in other companies. So many people love to stay there it provides little chance for internal movement and breeds stagnant job responsibilities.

    Pros

You will be surrounded by brilliant co-workers on every project you work on. RAND encourages a work-life balance. The multi-disciplinary culture represents what many people believe academia should evolve towards in order to become increasingly relevant.

    Cons

brilliance is generally accomodated by big egos....but its for less harmless reasons than a corporate culture would engender

    Advice to Management

I think RAND leadership has done and will continue to do a phenomenal job, as long as we stay objective in our research.
