I have been working at RSM Chio Lim full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    1. Friendly colleagues at non-management level who are willing to help (if they can find the time) 2. Opportunities to take on more workload, because the company understaffed (do not expect to be paid more or have a chance at promotion) 3. Foreigners are welcome to join (audit has 80% Malaysians and 20% others)

    Cons

    1. Company is terribly understaffed, during non-peak period staffs still have to work 7days a week from 9-10PM, just to keep up with the normal workload. 2. Company places too much importance on training sessions. At the end of the day, if your staff cannot get their work done, it affects the revenue of the company. Who will pay all the trainers, how will the staff/management/partners get their money. You cannot... expect your staff to go for a few days worth of training, which takes up the time that could be used to do work, and become experts on the after the few days of trainings. 3. Benefits and remuneration is non-existent. Sure, you get the normal days of leave, but that is it. Thinking of getting the company to sponsor your professional papers? Sure, sign another 1 year bond. 4. If you have a job that requires you to travel to the clients place, you have to travel to the nearest MRT station and then take a cab to the clients place. (So unlucky you if your client is at Tuas link) If you’re heading back from the clients place, you have to take a cab to the nearest MRT station to the client and then make your way Back home. If you have to OT till the wee hours of the morning, the entire team on the engagement has to share one cab ride, so it sucks being the person who stays the furthest from the client. 5. Do not use this place as a steeping stone to get into the big 4, it is not worth it to compromise your physical and mental health. Better learning and growth opportunities would be presented to you in smaller firms. Even if you are lucky enough to enter the big 4 after serving your 2 year bond, you would have to drop title. 6. From an audit staff POV, trainings are a waste of time. Everyone goes there to catch up on their sleep or bring their laptops down to do work.

    Advice to Management

“The obvious choice outside the big four” - terrible slogan. RSM chio lim is NOT big 4. You do not have big 4 numbers or the resources of the big 4. There has to be more coordination between the people initiating the trainings and the partners/managers who are distributing the workload. Staff are expected to be experts in the industries after attending 8 hours worth of trainings. Your people know that they have... to work long hours and over the weekends (if not they wouldn’t join the industry to begin with), but you are not providing your people with enough time or resources to learn and grow from all the trainings, because partners and managers just bombard staff with work
