Pros

The company is constantly improving, both in terms of process and technology.
The company is not afraid to try new things, which is good if you are a tech person.
There are some very sharp tech people there.
Great location with decent exercise facilities.
The company is very involved in charitable causes

Cons

Developers are responsible for 24x7 support of some really crappy old legacy applications, which means lots of pages in the middle of the night.
No funding to fix crappy old applications to make them easier to support and maintain and reduce middle of the night pages.
A bit of big-company bureaucracy in a small-ish company, but I've seen worse.

Advice to Management

Keep improving
Get developer feedback on inexpensive ways to improve developer efficiency

    I worked at Railinc full-time

    Pros

Lots of great people, technology and industry. Also create cool events and gym for moral.

    Cons

Oh my, this will take a while-
    1. There is a log jam for promotions and it's just not happening. Only happens in customer service.
    2. mid and high management or pretty stuck in their position and on themselves. No mentoring, educating and really any productivity takes place at those levels. Some even create their own titles such as "CEO of Director Level". He is about the biggest moron and says it when no other management is around however, almost everyone knows who it is.
    3. Pay stinks and benefits are starting to get close to it. While the RR industry is conservative, software development and maintenance is not and thus, that is why people leave.
    4. Railinc is very insulated because it is the hub for many industry transactions but outside that, cannot inovate or provide good commercial solutions.
    5. With the layoffs for the past 1.5 years, most the good people are gone. After talking with a good friend that is a recruiter, found many people to be interested in leaving there.
    6. Many rules\guidance from management comes to your manager to decide who has favorites and terrible decision making ability - right "CEO of the Director Level"?!?!?!?

    Advice to Management

Groom all new management to replace the Directors and above. Too many old methods and crazy thinking. Sitting on good potential but just getting the cheapest and what appears to be the most loyal person getting raises but it is just all backstabbing because they cannot get another gig.

For the communications manager whom will respond, you really earn your money but it is an endless black whole here.
