Pros

Occupies a great niche within the environmental NGO space, the org is growing rapidly and evolving so the work is challenging, people are friendly and hard-working

Cons

Lack of management training in upper management combined with lack of time to devote to on-the-job training means that mentorship opportunties are few and far between. The company does provide each staff person a generous budget for external training. Many systems were designed for a larger organization (which Rare expects to grow into) so work can seem onerous at times.

Advice to Management

Give more staff management opportunities
Grow all functions in the regional offices to make them more independent of head quarters

    I worked at Rare full-time

    Pros

Rare does important work. If you want to spend your days working alongside other passionate, intellectual, and driven people, all looking for ways to provide access to clean water, get communities to work together, ease food security concerns, and drive changes in human behavior, then Rare is a great place to work. Yes, it's a little crazy. Yes, there are high expectations. But if you also hold yourself to a high standard, and you thrive in high energy and entrepreneurial environments, then you'll love the fast pace at Rare. It's fun. It's open-minded. It's constantly looking for ways to grow and make an even bigger impact.

    Cons

None. If you're looking to work for a cool organization that makes a difference, you should try working at Rare...you will be a better person for it!

    Advice to Management

Just keep engaging, communicating, and empowering your people as you do your communities...and keep the faith.

    Pros

Like what has been said below: some great people with good ideas, lots of potential. Really interesting work in places like Colombia, Philippines and Indonesia.

    Cons

Leadership, c-suite in particular. By far some of the most challenging people I've ever worked with...and unfortunately so uninspiring. For instance, their latest motto to staff: "Are you in or are you out?" Coming out of any meetings and calls with them, I've never felt so unmotivated and depressed about things...

What's the return on investment? How many millions have been spent and to what end? The best things at Rare could still happen without the excessive management and overhead costs--and there just seems to be so much wasteful spending.

    Advice to Management

I've given up hope that c-suite actually cares to listen to staff anymore...so I would give this advice to the board, partners, donors. Please just hold Rare's leadership accountable for their choices, promises, and behavior. 75% of our job is now navigating the demands, personalities, and general craziness of c-suite--it is exhausting. Imagine what we could achieve with such energy directed towards actually doing Rare's good work.
