Pros

Raytheon has some very interesting projects to work on if you can wait a year or so for security clearances to start coming in. The work can be highly technical and there are opportunities to publish or patent ideas, which the company rewards monetarily.

Cons

The downside is that because the projects are classified, groups within the company are isolated and the opportunities for expanding your network are limited. Promotions seem to occur automatically every other year until you become an E3 or E4 then it becomes competitive with other people in your group and even if you are filling the role of an E5 or E6, you will not be promoted unless there are fewer people at that level in your section and you are outperforming them.

Advice to Management

When workers are getting high performance reviews and are filling the roles of higher positions, they need to be promoted even if this is true of several people in the same section. Otherwise employees will quickly become discontent.

    Pros

    When given something challenging, it is a good place to work
    Most people I worked with, we had a good comraderie
    Benefits were good

    Cons

    Training was available only when there was money in the budget for it.
    Also, upper management will not allow you to take a course, if they don't think you need it, but it would benefit you on climbing the ladder.
    Too much anamousity between SW and Systems.
    Need to go after commercial contracts while waiting for that big defense contract.

    Advice to Management

    Do not place people in the does not meets category just to meet the HR quota, if you want to destroy morale that is one of the best ways to do it.
    Also, be upfront with the employees when a RIF is coming and don't say you can't answer the question when you know darn well a RIF will take place the next day, get some backbone.

    Pros

    Excellent training in "big company" processes. Raytheon (and their legacy companies) have a lot of "lessons learned" and these lessons made their way into the processes flown down to employees.

    Cons

    Raytheon is a process-heavy organization. As such, some processes exist that are perceived as non-value added. Upward mobility is limited in the NCS organization.
