Pros

Starting out as a production artist, I was given a wide range of tasks including but not limited to production work, interior/cover designs, template creation, and preparing files for prepress. This gave me a unique opportunity to grow skills in areas I was interested in while still learning about different areas of design I most likely would not have pursued on my own. Throughout my entire career at Red Line I was given the opportunity to learn all of these processes, and bring those skills to each of the jobs I held within the company. My time at Red Line helped me feel prepared as a graphic designer, in not only publishing, but any field I decided to bring my design skills to next. I learned great organization skills, how to balance a large workload, and how to efficiently manage crucial deadlines. On top of all of this, I was able to build meaningful friendships that I still cherish even after leaving the company.

Cons

- Because of the nature of the publishing business, time mgmt skills are crucial to being successful at this company. In my time there I noticed some areas of the company struggling to live up to the necessary deadlines. - Working in publishing created a fantastic base for my career, but I felt that I reached a plateau around my 4.5 yr mark. I would have loved more brainstorming sessions with mgmt to see how my future in publishing could have grown.

Pros

Nice people, interesting book topics.

Cons

Part of their sales pitch was their company culture and treating employees like family, but this was quickly obviously not true. Organization and communication were a mess, nearly a third of company either left or was laid off during my stay, including both of my supervisors and they didn't have a creative director until my last day on the job. I didn't receive training on their process, people were eager to report my mistakes to management, and ultimately I was let go for trying to fix a mistake I made earlier in a book due to "not following the proper workflow" which they, again, did not instruct me on. They also asked me to take on video editing tasks immediately which was something they had asked about in the interview, which also interrupted my ability to learn how to do my job. Additionally there are no upward or career advancement options, it's a family company and you're not part of the family.
