I have been working at Relic Entertainment full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Unlike most studios, designers at Relic are given a lot of independence and feature ownership. The "silo" effect can sometimes occur, but the company works hard to improve their processes. Relic has been in the business long enough that there is no department that I would consider weak. Understaffed on occasion, but certainly not weak. The executive, production, art, QA, development, animation, design, and IT staff are all exceptionally professional. There is no dead wood at this studio.

    Cons

No complaints, other than not enough donuts are delivered on Fridays.

I worked at Relic Entertainment full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good Pay. Good Benefits. Great Employees. Generally pleasant work environment.

    Cons

Customer wishes are often ignored. Though treated well, the concerns of employees often at least seem to be ignored. Note: I left the company for personal reasons, my leaving the company does not in any way reflect negatively on the company.

  2. "Excellent benefits, bad culture for real game development"

I have been working at Relic Entertainment full-time

    Pros

    - fantastic benefits, like 100% basic dental, 100% chiropractors and what not - free organic fruits and vegetables, wide choice of beverages - no crunches

    Cons

This company used to be about great games but now it's about great benefits and great socializing. Because of that, there are too many people in the company who shouldn't be here in the first place. What's worse, they can consider you an enemy if you strive too hard to make a difference, because it doesn't make them look good. Because while you are here to make great games, they are here mostly to socialize and enjoy massive benefits, bonuses, titles, with little or no responsibility. The company is filled with non-technical managers/producers who simply don't know their knowledge domain and don't care about the games in development - all they do is just moving around work items in the project management tool, having endless useless meetings/stand-ups/sync-ups/follow-ups etc., constantly re-prioritizing and re-scheduling everyone's work, and just socializing. The game development process is probably the slowest and the most complicated in the industry but they don't really care or don't know what to do about it. I haven't seen in my whole life a better example of Parkinson's Laws about bureaucracy and work than Relic. Some principal programmers are impressive while some are shockingly unintelligent, which they compensate by having "social skills", especially behind your back. Companies who really want to succeed and come up with great games work and feel very differently.
