I have been working at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

As one would expect at a top engineering school, I've learned a tremendous amount and had the opportunity to work with a lot of very smart people.

Cons

Must pay out of pocket for health insurance. While I have been fortunate, in most cases funding must be renewed each year, leading to uncertainty at times. Conference travel expenses are only supported partially by the school, which means a lot of out of pocket costs for conferences that aren't within driving distance.

I have been working at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute full-time

    Pros

Great reputation, excellent location in a town that is slowly but surely bettering itself. Certain departments have a large budgets and can spend it on state-of-the art tools. Others? Not so much

    Cons

Some departments are incredibly disorganized and falling apart. A lot here has a shiny veneer, but underneath most of the infrastructure of the school is crumbing. Funds are not allocated where they should be

  2. "RPI is a great place to learn and research, but does not compensate well."
